Rowing History and Background

Daramalan College has a proud rowing history and was one of the first schools to build their own rowing shed on a prime location on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin. The Daramalan College rowing program provides a pathway allowing students the opportunity to achieve at the highest level, if they desire, with many Daramalan students having represented the ACT.

Rowing provides all students with a platform to deal with adversity as well as success, building resilience and self-esteem. All participants benefit from the commitment, self-motivation and practice required. They learn that self-improvement can be achieved through tenacity and hard work.

The teamwork required ensures students learn to manage their relationships with others both in the boat and on land. Along with the physical fitness and health benefits, good communication, organisation and time management skills are developed.

Our rowing program is offered to students in Years 8 – 12. The season runs over the summer months, during Terms 4 and 1.

Competitions

Rowing ACT conducts regattas on the Territory’s lakes. Most races are held on the 1800m rowing course on Yarramundi Reach on Lake Burley Griffin. Regattas cater for all categories of rowers and the Daramalan College Rowing Tent and BBQ is a welcoming meeting place for rowing families, friends and supporters to cheer our boats across the finish line.

Training

Training sessions commence in Term 4 and are held several times a week both before and after school. The times and days your child trains depends on which boat the rower is allocated to. Water sessions are conducted at the Daramalan Boat Shed, Lake Burley Griffin. The College provides bus transfers for morning sessions from the College to the Boat Shed, returning in time for morning classes. A bus transfers students from the College to the Boat Shed in the afternoons and parents collect their child from the Boat Shed at the completion of the session.

Coaches

The rowing program encourages our rowers to become involved in coaching and officiating at regattas with many of our students gaining valuable skills and experience through coaching younger rowers with the opportunity to obtain their boat licence and level 1 Rowing Coach accreditation.
