Year 10 Languages

Languages

In Year 10 the study of Languages is an elective subject. Students continue with the Language they have studied in Years 7 to 9.

The aim of language learning in Year 10 is to enable students to respond to and discuss texts from a range of sources and to develop their ability to improvise and paraphrase when speaking and writing in the target language on topics such as Holiday Destinations, Environmental Issues, Careers and Weekend Activities. Students will increase their intercultural awareness and further develop their appreciation of the lifestyle, beliefs and customs studied and competence in using socio-culturally appropriate language in a variety of situations. Students are encouraged to participate in discussions and to openly express their opinions and ideas on a broad range of globally relevant and sometimes controversial topics and attitudes. Emphasis can be placed on language for certain purposes, such as hospitality and tourism, to cater for the varied reasons for which students select to continue to learn their chosen language. By the end of Year 10, students will have learned all major grammatical structures and be able to apply these in a variety of contexts.

In Japanese students learn how to use grid paper to write extended texts. All courses are organised into four sequential semester units, which are normally studied over Years 9 and 10. The Year 9 and 10 course forms the foundation for further study of Continuing Languages in Years 11 and 12.

Tours to France, Germany and Japan are offered in alternate years to practise and reinforce students’ developing language skills through exchanges with our sister schools and through interactions during travel.
