Ex-Daramalan student Nick Kyrgios and Daria Gavrilova have given Australia its first Hopman Cup in 17 years after defeating Ukraine in Saturday night’s final at Perth Arena. Kyrgios maintained his unbeaten run in singles play to seal the victory for Australia Green by defeating Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 6-4. Earlier, Daria Gavrilova had handed Australia Green a 1-0 lead a straight sets victory in the women’s singles rubber.

Gavrilova, number 36 in the world, defeated the 19th-ranked Elina Svitolina 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) after saving set points in the second-set tie-breaker. The Hopman Cup outing will boost Nick’s confidence in the build-up to the Australian Open beginning on January 18, with his series of victories including the scalp of world number two Andy Murray. Kyrgios was the hero of Hopman Cup XXVIII, winning all four of his singles matches and combining with Gavrilova for an unbeaten doubles run.

Best of luck in the Australian Open Nick!
